Aiden O'Connell
Quarter Back
A Struggling Start With A Chance To Improve
Update: Aiden O’Connell’s journey in the NFL has been anything but smooth. Drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, he was initially seen as a potential future starter. However, his transition to the professional level has been challenging, with struggles on the field making it clear that his development is still a work in progress.
Aiden was thrust into action earlier than expected when Jimmy Garoppolo’s tenure with the Raiders didn’t pan out. Unfortunately, his inexperience showed. He struggled with interceptions and consistency, leading to multiple quarterback changes. By 2024, Gardner Minshew had taken over the starting role, only for O’Connell to regain the spot as the lesser of two evils. After starting with #4 which was Derek Carr’s number, in 2024 he changed to #12 which was Rich Gannon and Ken Stabler’s number.
With 2025 on the horizon, it remains to be seen whether he can turn things around and solidify his place in the league. His future is uncertain but he certainly has improved during the last two seasons. Will it be enough?
From Walk-On To The NFL
O’Connell’s underdog mentality is one of his defining traits. He wasn’t a highly recruited player coming out of high school and had to walk on at Purdue University. Through sheer determination and a commitment to improving his game, he climbed the ranks and eventually earned the starting role. At Purdue, he showed flashes of brilliance, throwing for over 9,000 yards and 65 touchdowns. His accuracy and pocket presence made him a standout in college football, but translating that success to the NFL has proven to be a different challenge.
The Purdue Guy Wearing #12
The Raiders saw something in Aiden when they drafted him, but his struggles on the field have raised questions about his long-term potential. Wearing number 12, he has shown moments of promise, but turnovers and decision-making issues have overshadowed his highlights. If he hopes to remain with the Raiders, he’ll need to show significant improvement in 2025.
Why Raiders Nation Has Mixed Opinions
While some fans still believe O’Connell has potential, others are skeptical about whether he is the right fit for the team’s future. His humble personality and work ethic are appreciated, but results matter in the NFL. If he wants to earn the full trust of Raider Nation, he’ll need to prove that he can lead the team to success and avoid the costly mistakes that have plagued his early career.
